Large Silver Torso Necklace
The Torso necklace is inspired by a sculpture Elsa loves at the V&A museum in London. This simple design celebrates the natural female form in a sculptural pendent. Handmade in sterling silver, the torso necklace comes in a satin finish to emulate the ancient and unpolished carved stone sculptures this piece is inspired by.
The torso is 5cm long and comes on an 18 inch silver chain. Made for our Vices & Virtues showcase.
"They may be naked but they are not bodies of lust; we reject its stifling nature. Instead they are a celebration of the female form in its beauty and strength. Each carved creature is virtuous in its being, connected to feminist ideals. Elsa reasserts her vision of the body through the female gaze and to counter patriarchal concepts. Sculpted from the perspective of sensuality and bravery, she translates influences from historical art into her own reality. Each study focuses on human connection and within these goddess-like forms the wearer finds strength and vulnerability, both a part of their intimacy."
"The process of making each ‘Virtue’ is meditative, using ancient wax carving techniques, layer by layer the forms come to life and the ‘slow’ creation clears her mind. We welcome their peaceful presence, like sleeping beauties with no need to be rescued. They offer the calm opportunity to contemplate the human form."
The Designer
Made in London by Elsa Tierney. Inspired by jewellery, sculpture and artefacts, her designs have a quality reminiscent of lost treasures and each piece is a homage to modern artists such as Tamara De'Lempicka, Brancusi and Man Ray and encompassing her love for Art Deco, Bauhaus and Futurist design. Combining her Fine Art background with traditional jewellery making techniques, Elsa likes to create small jewellery sculptures, designed to be exhibited on the body.
"I love to sit at my bench with a fresh piece of metal or wax and a new design in mind. The process of making is meditative, concentrating on the piece and my mind clear of everyday things. Specializing in wax carving, a practice used for both jewellery making and sculpture and based on an ancient process called Lost Wax Casting, I like to explore different avenues of working with wax, giving me an alternative approach to jewellery making that encompasses my passion for fine art and sculpture. Trained in jewellery making with a degree in Fine Art at Sir John Cass & Guildhall University, I incorporate influences of modern art and combine them with traditional methods of jewellery making."
