Blue Gem Slug Brooch
Oxidised sterling silver slug brooch with a variety of synthetic blue sapphire gemstones that glisten and shine in the light. A subtle glisten in the light will show each of the stones' natural shine. The slug is hollow and has been hand carved with extraordinary detail.
Slug length 5cm with a steel pin.
Amy Findlay studied at The Glasgow School of Art and creates wearable jewellery that centres the creation of slugs. Amy chose to use slugs as a message which translates the common disgust surrounding insects and the body. Purposely allowing a slimy garden creature to crawl over your clothes and wearing one with pride is a concept which is playful and ambiguous.
Each piece of jewellery in this body of work is hand carved and cast into bronze or silver. The pieces are set with synthetic sapphires, rubies and cubic zirconia into wax which are then cast into metal embedding the stones in place. This technique mirrors the natural conceptions of nature and not tightly controlling each stage of the making process. The stones are all set down the main body to emphasis the crawling and moving nature slugs have. Glistening in the light shows an intended glider of nature.
