Teal and Silver Wooden Earrings

Sculptural wooden earrings evoke the shapes of urban landscapes, painted with a gorgeous texture in teal with a hint of red. Cristina gently scorches the edges of the wood and adds a sterling silver bar and earring post.

The Designer

Cristina Zani was born and grew up in Italy and completed an MFA in Jewellery at Edinburgh College of Art.

Inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Cristina’s work is a reflection on the urban environment, its geometries and unique stories. The collection ‘My Seoul’ is influenced by the contrast between antique and contemporary architecture of South Korea and reflects her personal experience of its cities. Cristina approaches the creation of her jewellery in the same way she would compose a story and, like Marco Polo of Invisible Cities, she borrows elements from the city’s landscape to visually describe it and subtly suggest it to the viewer.

Using a combination of different shapes, colours and geometries she creates unique pieces. The choice and juxtaposition of materials, shapes and colours echoes South Korea’s sombre modern buildings intertwined with bright ancient wooden temples and vibrantly painted palaces. Like those buildings, these pieces show the vulnerability of materials when exposed to time and elements; the layers and colours that slowly transform with the passing of years. Simple in form, but rich in stories and complexities. Cristina mainly works with wood, which is combined with precious metals and sometimes stones. The pieces are sculptural, bold and tactile; they are usually large in scale, but light to wear. Although they are based on preparatory sketches, Cristina’s way of working with materials is largely intuitive and instinctive. This way of working often sparks ideas for new pieces or brings unexpected turn.

To look after your jewellery we recommend it must not be worn in the bath, shower or whilst swimming and we advise any perfume or hairspray is to be applied before putting on your jewellery to avoid contact with chemicals and cosmetics. Please remove your jewellery before engaging in practical activities such as sport.
