DUALITY Ex Machina Sapphire Ear Mandrel by Estelle Burton
Statement earrings made from iron adorned with blue synthetic sapphires and 14ct yellow gold ear posts.
The Ex-Machina micro-collection draws inspiration from a long history of scientific glass making in the UK. A celebration of extraordinary craftsmanship and innovation to be found in the factory space. By intentionally blurring the lines between (mass) production and high craft, this jeweller has been able to explore a new, unfamiliar world of opposing materials. Where found objects, specialist glasses, precious metals and gemstones are brought together through a blend of precision-engineering and traditional jewellery making techniques at her studio in Rye.
Precisely formed, jewel-like objects emerge to expose a duality of purpose to challenge value hierarchies. Offering a new visual lexicon which feels at once strangely familiar and yet entirely new. A space where nothing wasted - the intrigue of elegant glass coated, velvety metal precisely capture the skill and beauty to be found through exploration of new frontiers.

The Designer
Estelle Burton began her jewellery journey in 2001 in London, where alongside a career in advertising and design, she became a Fellow of the Gemmological Society in London. From there, Estelle studied jewellery manufacture at The British School of Jewellery where she learned the traditional techniques of stone setting, engraving and design.
In 2016, following a move to the South Coast, Estelle went on to complete a Contemporary Craft degree at University of Brighton. An emphasis on a more experimental approach to making broadened her skillset and develop her own design aesthetic through the exploration of different materials. Estelle recently graduated from a Research Masters in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martin's where her practice has been based on exploring innovations in glass technology and what is considered to be 'unrecyclable' glass in new contexts.
