This marine invertebrate, just a few centimetres in length, interconnects and builds a colony, secreting calcium carbonate, to form a hard skeleton, which becomes a beautiful reef, housing thousand of species of marine and plant life, slowly growing over millions of years to becoming a bulwark against violent seas and protecting the ocean bed from getting washed away.
