DUALITY Round Orange Ear Studs by Anne Earls Boylan
"Perched on the ear, these sculptural forms sit waiting for their opportunity to engage! They play with many aspects of Duality through manufacture and inspiration. Mimicking the behaviour of plants and particles, their laser-sintered shell draws the eye towards its precious cargo of metal and stones. Yet the layers of language also playfully posit this technological shell as protector of the hand-made. A contradictory collaboration has set the scene and the ear, its perfect stage!"
"The works address Duality in both material and process through their use of hand and technology. There is a contradictory yet dynamic conversation ‘between’ materials which plays with our notions of value, while the unapologetic colours provide a strange synergy that speaks of the future."

The Designer
Anne Earls Boylan began her career in jewellery at the Ulster Polytechnic studying 3-dimensional design, followed by a Masters specialising in Jewellery at the Royal College of Art. After a brief spell exhibiting with Dazzle and workshop projects at the V&A, she embarked on a PGCE at UCL's Institute of Education. Returning to Northern Ireland in 1991 AEB began Lecturing in Jewellery & Silversmithing at the University of Ulster where she remained until 2021. She now lives and works in the countryside outside Belfast making jewellery which references the rich history of adornment. Drawing on a dynamic and explorative space, AEB plays with the roles material, process and value play within her pieces. For her jewellery is a lively collaboration between material, artist, wearer and audience. AEB has exhibited nationally and internationally, with work in the Arts Council NI collection. She is a founding member of ACJSNI and current regional lead of ACJ, curating a number of significant exhibitions that bring the richness of contemporary Jewellery to new audiences.
