Sunrise on the Foreshore Silver And Sapphire Necklace
Courtney’s showcase piece for the Meet the Maker exhibition, titled ‘Sunrise on the Foreshore’, is inspired by a particularly memorable sunrise she saw whilst at the Thames foreshore in late Autumn. Vibrant sapphires sparkle amongst the textured silver; graduating from blue to pink to yellow to emulate those first bursts of colour seen at sunrise. With the weight of this necklace providing a calming, grounding presence for the wearer, this special piece evokes the feelings of hope and quiet tranquillity that come with a new day.
Necklace length 18"
Sapphire, the birthstone of September, is most desired in its pure, rich blue colour but is present in almost every colour including pink, yellow and green. In the Middle Ages the gem was believed to protect those close to you from harm and also represented loyalty and trust. It is also the gem that married couples traditionally gift on their 45th wedding anniversary
The Designer
Courtney Durka is a London based contemporary jeweller whose work is deeply inspired by natural forms and textures. Based in Greenwich, Courtney’s work reflects the connection she feels to the River Thames, taking inspiration from the textures and forms found on the foreshore.
Drawing inspiration from the flowing form of the river, Courtney transforms precious metals into wearable pieces of art that echo the rhythm of the water, the dappling of the sunlight on the surface and the moving currents hidden below.
Since graduating from Central Saint Martins, Courtney has developed her collection of work utilising the lost wax casting process, amongst other traditional jewellery techniques to form a body of work that highlighted her passion for texture and form. She focuses on slow, intentional making that is sustainable and ethical, using recycled metals and responsibly sourced ethical gemstones from trusted suppliers.
